image Where Cushing Met His Fate. Where Cushing Met His Fate. image Gun of Cushing's Battery at the Angle on Cemetery Ridge at sunset. A graduate of the West Point class of 1861, Alonzo Cushing commanded Battery A of the 4th U.S. Artillery at Gettysburg. Cushing was shot multiple times while defending the Angle against Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. Despite the painful wounds, he stuck to his guns. As he turned to shout an order, he was killed by a bullet which passed through his open mouth. He was but 22 years old. Cushing is buried at West Point. The sergeant who took over for him was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism and gallantry. This photograph (like almost all of my Gettysburg pictures) is straight off the camera -- my opinion is Mother Nature needs no enhancement. Thank you for all the comments and invites for my picture. :) to ponder and dream ~ winter sunset little round top, gettysburg, pennsylvania to ponder and dream ~ winter sunset little round top, gettysburg, pennsylvania image Unedited, untouched, straight from the camera: silhouette of a tree on Little Round Top, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field to ponder and dream." - General Joshua Chamberlain, October 3, 1889. I've been to Gettysburg many times, and I can say for certain that there are these quiet moments on the battlefield, away from the noise of tourists and crowds, where you can feel that radiant fellowship, where the battlefield comes alive and you can feel the history hanging thickly in the air. This photograph captures that feeling, I think. This is a re-edit of a photograph taken in May 2009 about thirty minutes prior to sunset on Oak Hill, the first day battlefield north of Gettysburg.

Mozart Regiment at Devil's Den Mozart Regiment at Devil's Den image The 40th New York Infantry monument at Devil's Den. The monument is located in the “Valley of Death” along Crawford Avenue at the base of Little Round Top. Sculpted by R.D. Barr of Hallowell and Westerly granite and bronze, it cost $2,225.00 and was dedicated July 2, 1888. The monument features one of the best granite carved statues on the entire battlefield. It depicts a soldier kneeling behind a boulder. Bronze plaques in the shape of a diamond — the Third Corps badge — explain the regiment’s history and role at Gettysburg. This monument marks the position of the regiment at approximately 4:30 in the afternoon of July 2. #464 in Explore on March 24, 2008. General John F. Reynolds General John F. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth." - Abraham Lincoln On July 3, 1863, Confederate troops from Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia launched an assault against this location. After crossing almost a mile of mostly open ground, the remaining survivors came across the stonewall here, known as the Angle, where they were repulsed by the Union Army of the Potomac. The area became known as the High Water Mark of the Confederacy -- Lee's army was compelled to retreat and began on the road that ultimately led to Appomattox. When you view the field from the spot where Pickett, Pettigrew, and Trimble's men charged, the landmark you can find to mark the location of the Angle is the "umbrella tree." Although not a witness tree, the so-called Umbrella Tree has a unique shape and stands on one of the most hallowed spots in American history. This shot is almost straight
