Where I took my leap of faith

This moss lives on the rocks by the Cle Elum River, where I faced my fear and jumped into the stunningly cold water. It was a big deal for me to have done that. On the way there with my fellow campers, and even once we got there, I was sure I would not jump in. I don't do things like that.
At some point in my young adulthood, I started experiencing bouts of phobia around jumping into (and swimming in) lakes and rivers. Last August, while on Orcas Island with my then-boyfriend, we decided to hike up Mount Constitution. On the way up, we happened upon a gorgeous lake surrounded by evergreen-studded cliffs. I wanted to go swimming and experience the full beauty of the surroundings, but I just couldn't seem to overcome my fear of touching slimy, fallen trees underwater, and who knows what else.
Phobias are, by definition, irrational fears, and thus, impenetrable by intellect and reason. It didn't matter that I knew intellectually that I would be okay; I was powerless over the panic I fel
