It was a big deal for me to have done that. On the way there with my fellow campers, and even once we got there, I was sure I would not jump in. I don't do things like that. At some point in my young adulthood, I started experiencing bouts of phobia around jumping into (and swimming in) lakes and rivers. Last August, while on Orcas Island with my then-boyfriend, we decided to hike up Mount Constitution. On the way up, we happened upon a gorgeous lake surrounded by evergreen-studded cliffs. I wanted to go swimming and experience the full beauty of the surroundings, but I just couldn't seem to overcome my fear of touching slimy, fallen trees underwater, and who knows what else.
