I am always fascinated by pregnancy and the whole experience of bringing a child into this world. For this drawing, I used Copic markers and inked it with Sakura Micron pens. I remember watching a show about a couple expecting a baby. They had a toddler as well and he would constantly rub his mother's belly and ask about the baby. The image stuck in my mind.

I often wonder about motherhood and what it means to care for another human being. Like much of my artwork, the style in this drawing was influenced by nouveau (such as the work of Alphonse Mucha) and vintage poster art. I saw an advertisement in a greeting card book that used the colors pistachio and brown and wanted to recreate that color scheme in this drawing. I don't know why I colored the woman's hair purple- it seemed like a nice enough color so I went with it. I also decided to use some pastel colors to give the mother and baby a soft visual appearance. The lettering is a result of my exploration with lines and letting them tell me where they want to go.
