IMG_3479 - Radiotherapy mask in situ IMG_3479 - Radiotherapy mask in situ image The moulded mask used to hold my head precisely in place, clamped down as it would be if I were in the machine. The red object is a firm foam rubber/plastic support for one's head and neck. Cropped detail from a slightly-soft picture of the whole machine. IMG_3492 - Radiotherapy Machine Room IMG_3492 - Radiotherapy Machine Room image Showing the 'bed' set up ready for a patient and the head of the radiotherapy machine in 'unused' mode. So that the beam of radiation can be aimed as exactly as possible, the bed can be raised and moved forward, back and sideways as well as rotating parallel to the floor. The 'head' of the machine, from where the radiation is projected, can also be rotated around the bed as well as moving up and down. The red things are firm foam rubber or plastic supports for your head/neck, knees and feet, which not only help in keeping position, but make you more comfortable on a dead-flat hard metal sheet. Apart from hygiene & (slight) comfort, the sheet helps the staff shift you around as they align your body in exactly the same position each time against a grid of laser beams so the radiation goes just where it should. Images of Memorable Cases: 50 Years at the Bedside Images of Memorable Cases: 50 Years at the Bedside $85.49 Herbert L. Fred, MD, MACP, and Hendrik A. van Dijk Book Dedicated to "the resurrection and preservation of bedside medicine," and written by one of the nation's most prominent medical educators, Images of Memorable Cases... presents the reader with 154 medical patients, along with a picture (the book includes more than 200 color images) and the information that was given the original doctor when the patient arrived at the clinic or emergency room. The reader is challenged to look at the picture, read the information, and make a diagnosis before turning the page to see the correct diagnosis. Prominent physicians describe Images of Memorable Cases... as "the best medical book I've ever read," "a tour de force in a currently underutilized genre," "a truly marvelous collection of medical images that would be very hard to find in one place anywhere else," and "a beautifully illustrated book [that] should be required reading for all medical students and housestaff." Dr. Herbert L. Fred is the author of more than 400 publications, including three books, providing philosophical insight into disease, the practice of medicine, the challenge of difficult diagnoses, and the exhilaration of true scholarship. Among his innumerable awards is a Presidential Citation given him by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. He is an emeritus member of the American Osler Society and has served on the editorial boards of numerous national medical journals. He is currently Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
