Jonah In the Doo-Dah Parade, 1.18.09
image
Every January, in the pacific streets
of Pasadena, California-
a wonderfully wild, colorful
parade ensues - a parade
for everyone and everything
that would be too weird or
conceptual or funny for
a conventional parade - and it's
color and electricity and
whimsy merged with the
sense of Carnaval or
Mardi Gras -
and we have been spectators
in this, the
Doo-Dah Parade, for the
past few years. Last year we
said - Jonah and I - that
somehow we had to get into this
parade.
Well, turns out the Doo-Dah has
open arms, and we were
warmly welcomed into the
fold -
and we came as clowns -
father, mother & son -
and Jonah was the
best beamish clown of all-
and though we were ready
to walk along with the procession-
we joined Mac's amazing
clown junkyard oldtimey
ragtimey truck cavalcade -
and we rode through the
parade route with it - though
occasionally we leapt out to
walk and entertain and hurl
beads and tortillas and
candy at the crowd -
and here's Jonah
with the great truck

Black and White has always been a favorite of mine.
This set of pictures was shot on the same day as America got it's first black president.
In my own way these are a tribute to an historic moment.

A huge ancient Pachypodium namaquanum (Halfmens) in habitat in the Northern Richtersveld. These giants only grow a few millimetres in a good year in the Richtersveld. This one was 2.5 - 3 times taller than me.
Note: This picture is quite special to me. It is the first Halmens that I saw growing in habitat in the Richtersveld. I saw it as the sun was setting, and ran up the hill to quickly get a shot before the sun sets.

Aloe dichotoma (Quiver Tree) - Travel Mug

Planet Explorer - Expedition Series - Travel Mug
Aloe dichotoma (Quiver Tree) in Namaqualand.
Why are they called Quiver Trees?
The Khoisan Bushman people of the Kalahari Desert, hollowed out the succulent branches to make "Quivers" to put their arrows in for hunting game. As there are not a lot of trees and resources in the Desert, they had to use what was available.

The Golden Ratio ( 1 : 1.618 ) - Double Sided Mug
$25.99
Mug
The perfect Ratio of 1:1.618 that occurs everywhere in Nature.
In this example I used the Corona (Latin for Crown) of a Stapelia schinzii var. schinzii flower (from Namibia, Africa), to illustrate Nature's divine Ratio. The Inner and Outer Corona, and Corolla Lobes (Petals) all conform to this exact Ratio.
The Golden Ratio (or Golden Mean) can be found in everything from human anatomy, to a nautilus shell, butterflies, insects, plants and flowers.
Architects used this formula (π / Phi) from the Parthenon to the Pyramids, and Renaissance Artists like Leonardo da Vinci used it for the Composition of the Mona Lisa.
