Page 24 Page 24 image Playing second fiddle doesn't mean you're a loser. Mother and Child Mother and Child J. Johnson image I am always fascinated by pregnancy and the whole experience of bringing a child into this world. For this drawing, I used Copic markers and inked it with Sakura Micron pens. I remember watching a show about a couple expecting a baby. They had a toddler as well and he would constantly rub his mother's belly and ask about the baby. The image stuck in my mind. Mother and Baby Mother and Baby J. Johnson image I often wonder about motherhood and what it means to care for another human being. Like much of my artwork, the style in this drawing was influenced by nouveau (such as the work of Alphonse Mucha) and vintage poster art. I saw an advertisement in a greeting card book that used the colors pistachio and brown and wanted to recreate that color scheme in this drawing. I don't know why I colored the woman's hair purple- it seemed like a nice enough color so I went with it. I also decided to use some pastel colors to give the mother and baby a soft visual appearance. The lettering is a result of my exploration with lines and letting them tell me where they want to go. Latte Latte J. Johnson image This drawing features one of my original characters, Latte. She is from a graphic novel I am working on that will feature adventure, fantasy, romance, and comedy. I wanted to do a portrait of her and used Copic markers to color her and gouache paint for the background. Copic markers are professional markers used in many artworks in Japan and are my personal choice for their great color selection and their bendable nibs which resemble paint brushes. Because of the nibs, they are very easy to work with and are great for laying down colors. Gouache paint was used for the background since it is very opaque but water soluble to make blending easy. The style is my personal style which has been influenced by many different manga books I have read. Gender Gender J. Johnson image I think about gender many times. I think about what it means to be a man or a woman, whether it's ingrained or a choice, whether there's only two genders or several, etc. In this artwork, I tried to create a person that was half man, half woman. When I was working on this drawing, I was also looking over books about lettering and calligraphy and so was inspired to create my own kind of style of lettering. As with much of my art, the style seen here was inspired by Nouveau and vintage poster art. I used purple for the letters and backdrop for it vibrancy and its' significance in the gay community. To achieve a smooth appearance, I used Copic markers and brown pens.
