Female Green Jumping Spider - Lunch
image
A fully grown female Green Jumping Spider (Mopsus mormon), she is about 15mm in length, and is the biggest jumping spider I have seen to date. I watched her hunt for lunch for about 2 hours, before giving up, and gently bringing her inside to take a few photos. I didn't expect to get lucky and watch her catch this fly which was flying around the house at the time.
Attatching a little saftey line to the mirror, the jump was swift and true. After taking a few more shots, I gently put her back on the same leaf I found her. These spiders live in little homes, usually created by pulling 2 leaves together, and filling with silk. Some species also have a little front door.

Yellow Paper Wasp
image
A beautiful small wasp, the Yellow Paper Wasp. They grow to 12mm in length, and this one was about that, feeding on lunch. They live in large paper nests, that can be up to 1 metre long. If you ever find a nest of these wasps, good thing to stay clear, they defend their homes aggressively, with painful stings.
Photographed in the Mt. Cootha Botanical Gardens, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
Preying Mantis Portrait
image
Baby Praying Mantis, found in my back yard, feeding happily on the fruit flies!! Yay! I watched him slowely stalk this little fly, and after about 30 minutes of creeping up, BAM the fly had no hope..

Green Jumping Spider

This little jumping spider is a female Green Jumping Spider (Mopsus mormon). These hunt in gardens, in low bushes, and like most insects.

Big Meanie
image
Here is the killer of my little friend "stripey", caught in the act, red handed!! There is obviously no love in the jumping spider species world, and competition for food is top priority.
This one a female Green Jumping Spider, much like the other I photographed on the same day. This one was smaller than the other Green Jumper however, at about 5mm in length. The poor little spider in it's mouth I shot earlier "Tiny Jumper".

Honey Bee in Flight
image
Early morning in the garden, I noticed a heap of honey bees, and little native bees harvesting the pollen from this flower bush. This one a Honey Bee or Apis mellifera. It always get the heart racing photographing these bees, getting so close with the macro lens can lead to some angry bees.
Noosaville, Queensland, Australia.
Bright Eyes
image
A portrait of the Green Long Legged Fly, or Dolichopodid Fly. If you have these flies in your rose garden, it's a good thing, they love the taste of Aphids. I waited and hung around these guys for a long while, and didn't unfortunately catch one eating. Not sure how often they do eat. Captured in the Northern Suburbs of brisbane, sitting on a common garden shrub leaf.
They grow to about 6mm in length, and usually bright coloured green in colour. Some varieties have black patches on their wings.
Noosaville, Queensland, Australia.
