On July 3, 1863, Confederate troops from Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia launched an assault against this location. After crossing almost a mile of mostly open ground, the remaining survivors came across the stonewall here, known as the Angle, where they were repulsed by the Union Army of the Potomac. The area became known as the High Water Mark of the Confederacy -- Lee's army was compelled to retreat and began on the road that ultimately led to Appomattox.
When you view the field from the spot where Pickett, Pettigrew, and Trimble's men charged, the landmark you can find to mark the location of the Angle is the "umbrella tree." Although not a witness tree, the so-called Umbrella Tree has a unique shape and stands on one of the most hallowed spots in American history.
