Charleston is known as the "Holy City" because it has so many churches and because it was amongst the most religiously tolerant colonial American cities. This photo took some work to get -- but I was trying for something like the South Carolina state flag with the palmetto tree and the crescent moon. Where Cushing Met His Fate. Where Cushing Met His Fate. image Gun of Cushing's Battery at the Angle on Cemetery Ridge at sunset. A graduate of the West Point class of 1861, Alonzo Cushing commanded Battery A of the 4th U.S. Artillery at Gettysburg. Cushing was shot multiple times while defending the Angle against Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. Despite the painful wounds, he stuck to his guns. As he turned to shout an order, he was killed by a bullet which passed through his open mouth. He was but 22 years old. Cushing is buried at West Point. The sergeant who took over for him was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism and gallantry. This photograph (like almost all of my Gettysburg pictures) is straight off the camera -- my opinion is Mother Nature needs no enhancement. Thank you for all the comments and invites for my picture. :)

as if the sky were celebrating as if the sky were celebrating image Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain wrote of a return visit of Gettysburg that it seemed as if it were "a radiant fellowship of the fallen." I've been to Gettysburg many times, and I can say for certain that there are these quiet moments on the battlefield, away from the noise of tourists and crowds, where you can feel that radiant fellowship, where the battlefield comes alive and you can feel the history hanging thickly in the air. This photograph captures that feeling, I think. This is a re-edit of a photograph taken in May 2009 about thirty minutes prior to sunset on Oak Hill, the first day battlefield north of Gettysburg. Splendiferous Sunset behind a Living Landmark. Splendiferous Sunset behind a Living Landmark. image Located on the western side of Hancock Avenue near the monument to General John Gibbon and the bronze cannons of Weir's Battery stands the "Gibbon Tree." This may well be the only remaining witness tree along the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg. According to legend, Brigadier-General John Gibbon was wounded near this tree during Pickett’s Charge on July 3, 1863. This walnut tree has suffered several lightning strikes and several of the limbs are dying, and so every time I come to the field, I wonder if it will still be standing. But it endures as it has for over 145 years -- a silent witness to one of the most momentous scenes in American history. It was a privilege to enjoy one of the best sunsets I've seen at Gettysburg and to photograph the display of beautiful colors behind this living, fragile landmark. The Last Full Measure. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth." - Abraham Lincoln On July 3, 1863, Confederate troops from Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia launched an assault against this location. After crossing almost a mile of mostly open ground, the remaining survivors came across the stonewall here, known as the Angle, where they were repulsed by the Union Army of the Potomac. The area became known as the High Water Mark of the Confederacy -- Lee's army was compelled to retreat and began on the road that ultimately led to Appomattox. When you view the field from the spot where Pickett, Pettigrew, and Trimble's men charged, the landmark you can find to mark the location of the Angle is the "umbrella tree." Although not a witness tree, the so-called Umbrella Tree has a unique shape and stands on one of the most hallowed spots in American history. This shot is almost straight
