Thomas Guesthouse
image
The "Thomas Guest House, appears on town postcards. It sits just offshore, looking as if one more storm or roosting pelican will cause it to crumble into the Gulf. Locals jokingly refer to it as 'The Honeymoon Cottage.' "

"On stilts here in the Gulf of Mexico, a house was built in 1959 by [Henry Taylor for] Philip and Margaret Thomas at the end of a 300-foot boardwalk. At the time, they owned the large Thomas Hotel in Gainesville.
"Col. George Walton came to Cedar Key to spend a weekend in the Island Hotel, and instead wound up spending years in this house, which he called the "Shark Tooth School". Walton wrote and published several books, including The Wasted Generation and The Tarnished Shield. It was partially destroyed by Hurricane Elena on Labor Day, 1985." It is now one of the most photographed places on the island."

A Dark Past
image
I think every Australian knows of Port Arthur, for dark events that happened here, both in the recent past, and early days of Australia. A correctional facility for the re-offending criminals from Britain and Ireland, this was more than just a jail. It was about changing these men to rejoin society.
It was used from 1833 until the 1877 when it was closed down. This was the main church, and it was one of Australia's first non-denominational churches. Built using convict labour, in the gothic style.
The bird in the shot is a crow. I did try to get one of the many rosellas in the area in the shot, but no luck there.

Battle Abbey - Novices' Quarters

On 14 October 1066 an army of invading Normans led by William the Conqueror, defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings in East Sussex. William vowed to build an abbey where the Battle of Hastings had taken place, and some of the original building still survives. the rest of the abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII.
This image is of the Novices' Quarters, this is where the monk novices met.
