The English had abandoned the castle prior to the landing, so it was easily taken over by the Norman troops. From here, they moved east to Hastings, where the famous battle took place on the 14th October 1066. William and his army defeated the English, killing Harold II, King of England. The original site where Pevensey Castle is today, was believed first built by the Romans in the first century AD. The surrounding walls to the castle are full of traditional Roman building structure. Once called Anderitum, was a Saxon Shore Fort in the Roman province of Britannia. Pevensey, East Sussex, England.
