A graduate of the West Point class of 1861, Alonzo Cushing commanded Battery A of the 4th U.S. Artillery at Gettysburg. Cushing was shot multiple times while defending the Angle against Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. Despite the painful wounds, he stuck to his guns. As he turned to shout an order, he was killed by a bullet which passed through his open mouth. He was but 22 years old. Cushing is buried at West Point. The sergeant who took over for him was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism and gallantry. This photograph (like almost all of my Gettysburg pictures) is straight off the camera -- my opinion is Mother Nature needs no enhancement. On day of pongal, rice and lentils are boiled in milk in an earthenware pot. The neck of the pot is decorated with mango leaves, ginger root and turmeric to represent tenderness, spice and auspciousness in life. Pongal from above image View from above. My mom gives me cow statues every year for christmas, so I have a lot of cows. Also she had given me those glass vegetables. They are really nice. A local potter has made the big brown and white cows.
