The Cunnamulla Fella

Cunnamulla is at the crossroads of the Matilda Highway and the Adventure Way. Cunnamulla, meaning 'long stretch of water' which refers to the nearby Warrego River. You can visit the Cunnamulla Fella Centre Art Gallery, Museum and Artesian Time Tunnel.
Blackheaded Python - Aspidites melanocephalus

BLACKHEADED PYTHON - Aspidites melanocephalus. Seeing a snake always pulls me up sharp, especially when it pops out from under a rock just after your partner has walked past it. It's so good to see such a healthy animal though.

Wild camels have bred up to very large numbers throughout much of central Australia. This one was corralled at a roadhouse east of Uluru.
Dead dog hanging loose

It is unlikely that there are any pure bred Dingos left in Australia. Cross breeding with introduced dogs has given us a hardy dingo look-alike. Unfortunately, the cross probably made the animal more of a problem for cattle stations.
Whose bleached bones?

Not sure but most likely a Red Kangaroo. Didn't take enough notice at the time but the skull looks rooish.

We did see a poisonous snake at the edge of the water here but it had been killed. Not sure what it was and forgot to ask.
Termite metropolis

Termite mounds can be found across most of Australia and they vary in shape, size and colour. The number of mounds in this one spot caught our eye.
Water is scarce out there

We love photographing the signs we see around the country. They are usually to the point, often very funny and sometime a little rude. In a country where it is claimed that country people don't have a lot to say, enough signs around a lonely road house reduces the number of questions from passing tourists by at least seventy percent.

The outback is lonely and not short of space, but still, it's nice to find good facilities every few hundred kilometers. Just don't fall into the 'long drop'.
Brolga - Grus rubicunda

A bird which features significantly in aboriginal mythology and stories. The Brolga (Grus rubicunda) can still be seen in small areas of the south of the continent and is common in the north east of Australia.
Cane toad - Bufo marinus

The cane toad (Bufo marinus) is probably regarded as Australia's number one feral enemy. Originally introduced to combat insect attacking the sugar cane crops in Queensland, it has now spread over much of the north east of the country and is moving rapidly westward and also southward. It kills larger animals such as the goanna who eat the poisonous toad.

Large wild cat. Shot and hung on a fence near Bealiba, Victoria. There are 12 million wild cats in Australia and they have a devastating effect on small native wildlife.
