The concluding volume of "Familiar Wild Birds" contains still more examples than its predecessor of birs which are, alas, "Familiar" no longer. May it prove, perchance, that to make some of these now rarer denizens of Britain better know is to secure for them some better protection from that final extinction which has already overtaken not a few: and may this attempt to convey some idea of the wonderful variety of bird-life hepl promote the loving study rather than the total destruction of those "wild birds" that remain.

Written between 1883 and 1888 this completer reproduction contains over 34 water color plates created by master painter Archibald Thorburn. The book contains information on now extinct species of birds as well as common birds still found in England, northern Europe. While this book is focused on the birds of England – you’ll recognize many species native to North America.
The book contains plates and egg information on the species as well for the ‘egg collector.’

The Color Plates were created by Archibald Thorburn, one of Brittan’s best water color artists. About A. Thorburn:
Archibald Thorburn has been described as 'the greatest ornithological artist ever, with a wonderful gift for placing his bird subjects in harmonious surroundings'. At the age of 20, Thorburn's work was accepted for the Royal Academy Exhibition in London, and in 1887 his reputation was secured by a commission to illustrate Lord Lilford's Colored Figures of the Birds of the British Isles, for which he painted 268 watercolors.
