Pevensey Castle
image
This very historical site in Southern England, is where Duke William II of Normandy (William the Conqueror) landed in September 1066. The English had abandoned the castle prior to the landing, so it was easily taken over by the Norman troops. From here, they moved east to Hastings, where the famous battle took place on the 14th October 1066. William and his army defeated the English, killing Harold II, King of England.
The original site where Pevensey Castle is today, was believed first built by the Romans in the first century AD. The surrounding walls to the castle are full of traditional Roman building structure. Once called Anderitum, was a Saxon Shore Fort in the Roman province of Britannia.

Battle Abbey - Novices' Quarters
image
On 14 October 1066 an army of invading Normans led by William the Conqueror, defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings in East Sussex. William vowed to build an abbey where the Battle of Hastings had taken place, and some of the original building still survives. the rest of the abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII.

A Cold Winter Solstice

Probably the highlight of my UK trip, getting up long before sunrise, and driving to the stones. I arrived about 2 hours before the sunrise to ensure a carpark. It was free for all street parking, and I knew it was going to be crouded! I was only about a mile walk, and when I arrived at the gates, the atmosphere was amazing. 100's of druids playing drums and flutes. Getting louder and louder waiting for the heritage to open the gates.
Finaly the flood of people was released, and they slowely made their way to the centre of the stones. This walk will stay with me forever... The heavy fog, the light morning light making the fog glow blue, and the snow covered ground.. it was fantastic!

St. George's Chapel - Windsor Castle
image
The St. George's Chapel is the place of worship for the Windsor Castle, and is the chapel of the Order of the Garter. This chapel is loaded with history, and it breathtaking on the inside. Unfortunately photography is not permitted inside, so I only have memories. I highly recommend the tour of Windsor Castle and the Chapel if visiting the UK. The burials here go way back in history, from King Edward IV in 1483!

*August 1, 1854 The light was lit by the first lighthouse keeper William Wilson.

*August 23, 1866 The lighthouse was relighted.
*1905 A wireless telegraph station was established on Seahorse Key by the Navy
*1915 The lighthouse was abandoned.
*Wooden wings were added later after the lighthouse was purchased as a private residence.
*1936 Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge
*1953 University of Florida established a marine center at the Seahorse Key, and still uses the lighthouse for a dormitory for some of the students.
*This information was obtained by the brochure "Step Back into History" made by the Florida Lighthouse Association, Inc.
*The lighthouse is now sinking, and desperately needs funds to help keep it from becoming a memory. To help, contact:

Whitman House on Cedar Key State Park and Museum Grounds
image
According to Steve Rajtar, St. Clair Whitman acquired this house in the 1920s, but the home had been built by at least 1890 and was located on 6th Street. He added the east and west wings. According to the Cedar Key Time Line on Park Place in Cedar Key's web site, in 1945, Mr. Whitman set up part of his home as a museum to display his collection of Indian artifacts and shells that had been collected since the 1880s. The house was donated to the Cedar Key State Museum in 1990, and renovations began in July, 1998. The St. Clair Whitman house was finally opened once again to the public in 2002.

"The congregation of the Church of God (sometimes called the Church of Jesus Christ) built a structure in 1925 at 709 Fifth Street, and it served the community as a Pentecostal church up until the 1970s, when it was sold to a builder of small fishing boats." The 1995 outlaw of commercial fishing probably would have had a toll on that business. It later became Wells Wood Outdoor Furniture, a small business owned by Herman F Wells in operation since about 1995, a facility for building wooden furniture. In 2007, the Cedar Key City Commission placed the building on the local register of historic places."

Drummond Community Bank

According to Steve Rajtar in Cedar Key Historical Trail, this bank is on the site of C.B. Rogers & Co. of the 1880s, and the brick building that now stands was built in 1912 as the Cedar Key State Bank which was organized by Dr. Dan Andrews, Dr. James Turner, and W.R. Hodges.

Schlemmer Grocery and Bakery

According to Steve Rajtar, in Cedar Key Historical Trail, the white brick building on the right was constructed for Nicholas Schlemmer in 1880. It was used as the Schlemmer Grocery and Bakery, and had an upstairs apartment, as well as an overhead walkway across 2nd Street leading to the Schlemmer House Hotel. The hotel was popular in the 1860s and 1870s, but was destroyed by fire after the 1896 hurricane and tidal wave.

L and M Saloon
image
The building was built of tabby about 1881 for Napoleon Woolridge, a druggist and town clerk for Cedar Key. The building housed a drugstore, post office, hardware store, barber shop, and a bar, including the infamous L & M. Attorney and author Pierce Kelley wrote a fictional legal novel called Fistfight at the L and M Saloon. When Mary Arline operated the bar as the Porthole Bar and Lounge, fire destroyed it in March, 1975. The bar was known as the L and M when operated by Lawrence and Melrose Clark.

Honeymoon Cottage, Cedar Key, Florida
image
"Thomas Guest House" is one of the most photographed buildings of the Cedar Keys, and appears on many town postcards. It barely stands just offshore the main Key, and is often jokingly called "The Honeymoon Cottage." Other nicknames have been the "House on Stilts" and "Shark Tooth School" (or "Shoal") by author Col. George Walton who, intending to stay only a weekend at the Island Hotel, instead spent years living in the Guest House during the mid 1970s.
The house was built in 1959 by Henry Taylor for Philip and Margaret Thomas at the end of a 300-foot boardwalk. At the time, they owned the large Thomas Hotel in Gainesville. During the research of this book, one living relative declared that Mr. Taylor was never fully compensated for his work, while a local told of how she often played with the Thomas children on the cottage's floor.
It and it's boardwalk were partially destroyed by Hurricane Elena on Labor Day, 1985. Subsequent storms created the condition in which the Honeymoon Cottage now sits.
