Occupying myself on a dreary day outside.
I liked this place
image
This place was the meaning of peace, away from the world and all its noisiness and neediness. I'm partial to this photo, but I honestly don't know how it will be either received or ignored. Doesn't matter, I just like looking at it anyway.
A walk in the woods

The color was nice while it lasted.
Twin Falls
image
They don't look alike, but that's what the locals call it. When we arrived at the Laurel Mountain Inn near Table Rock, my wife asked about local waterfalls, and which would the manager recommend? She gave us directions to this one, and said it was her favorite (upstate SC is mostly known for its many waterfalls) so here it is.
Just for technical note: one fall was in constant shade, the other in bright sunlight. I took many shots, but it was difficult to take one without the other being too bright or too dark. So this one turned out best, thanks to the rare small cloud that covered the sun for a brief moment.
Spanish Moss on Live Oaks
image
I talked with a groundskeeper at Brookgreen Gardens about the moss, which isn't a moss but rather an airborne plant that lives on the nutrients it derives from the air. My specific question was as to why there is Spanish Moss hanging from nearly every tree in Brookgreen, in copious amounts, and yet right across Highway 17 in Huntington Beach State Park the plant is nonexistent. His best answer was that the State Park probably removes the plant, but this was clearly impossible given the hundreds of acres of maritime forest I hiked through the day before.
So if anybody out there has any ideas on why an airborne plant grows very successfully on one side of the road, yet does not exist on the other side of the road, feel free to give a response.
By the way, best viewed large for the full effect of the rays through the moss-covered limbs. Its quite lovely.
Lake view of the Table Rock ridge
image
All nine peaks aren't captured in this shot. But I did hike them all, so I can verify they exist. Starting with the 4 miles to Pinnacle peak (the actual tallest peak on the ridge, to the left of the photo) up Pinnacle Pass trail (2400 ft elevation gain over those four miles, as tough a slog as they come) then across 9 peaks to the big mountain on the right, Table Rock. A grand total of 14 miles once you make it back down, all in one afternoon.
Yes, I was tired and sore, but it was nice. Better than everybody else just lounging around on vacation, lol!
Table Rock Waterfall
image
I just got back from vacation, and I'm ready to start sharing some of the wonderful places I've seen. This waterfall is from Table Rock State Park in Pickens, SC.
Don't look down, never turn back
image
Something like this can make you want to give up and head back to your nice car with the air conditioning and a cold drink. But you have to live with yourself if you ever quit before you reach the destination, and I can't.
I had to pull back from the ladder some to get this shot from halfway up. Notice the camera is pointed up, not down. Even I'm not that confident, lol!
Another parkway view from Craggy Knob Pinnacle
image
The closest peak right-of-center is Craggy Bald, from the top of which my previous photo was taken. The road carved in is of course the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the large parking area is Craggy Gardens. You can tell I am at a much higher position than the top of Craggy Bald, which is why I pointed out that the trail there is a relaxing leg stretcher. This one's a little tougher and steeper, but the views are incredible. 360 views and a large rocky platform an top with benches. I sat up there for maybe 45 minutes to an hour, leaned back and soaking it in with a big smile on my face.
Low Tide

When I came back along this same trail some hours later, the water was nearly covering the grass. Huntington Beach State Park.
Craggy Bald from Craggy Knob
image
You can't really tell that yon far ridge is actually a bald, at least at this size. I'll make a note pointing out the shelter over there, and some of the grassland. Most of the bald areas are on the other side of the ridge, and its all being steadily taken over by the emerging treeline. The mountain was a bald either by fire or the actions of Native Americans, or both; but over the intervening centuries it is returning to its original state.
Good morning down there!
image
Thousands of people woke up this morning not being able to see their hands in front of their faces. I was above all that, of course. What an incredible two day trip, I have seldom ever had everything be so perfect. It made up for all the rain and traffic and foiled plans from a few previous trips that didn't work out half as well. I saw things over these past two days that I have never seen, or had forgotten about just how wonderful life can be.
I stood there, on top of Mount Mitchell this morning, and thought to myself about how many people in this world will go their entire lives and never see anything this beautiful; and they never have a clue what they are missing.
Perfect morning

I don't think it gets much better than this.
Mount Mitchell
image
The clouds remind me of a long exposure waterfall shot. I saw so many wonderful things on this trip, from the Art Loeb trail on Black Balsam and Tennant near sunset to the peaks of Table Rock and the Chimneys in Linville Gorge. And I will get to those soon, I promise. But these shots from Mount Mitchell just blow me away.
Walking back at the end of day
image
The park closes at 6:30 this time of year, so I had to hustle back a few miles to get to the car before they shut the gates. But I still had time to shoot on the run, and this was just a magical scene along the trail, appropriately named the yellow trail BTW.
Return to the swinging bridge
image
When I first encountered this bridge earlier this year, a made an appointment with myself to come see it in the fall. Aren't you glad I kept the appointment?
Driving through Dolly Sods in the snow

Not much traffic out there on the one-lane roads this time of year.
