Dramatic Clouds Close-up, Sunset
image
Dramatic, colorful, cumulus clouds close-up, taken near sunset. (Note the direction of light -- this is not your typical sunset silhouette, where the light is coming from behind. These clouds are perpendicular to the sunset, making them much more dramatic.)
Sunset above the clouds
image
Sunset above the clouds. This photo was taken through the window of a passenger jet airplane just as we were about to descend through the clouds for our landing approach.
Flying between the cloud at sunset

Flying between the cloud at sunset. Some time ago, I hired a pilot (who was IFR rated) with a small airplane (Cessna 182) and flew between the clouds for this shot and a few others.

Fairy Falls - waterfall in Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
image
Fairy Falls - a waterfall (actually a "cascade") in the Columbia River Gorge area, Oregon, U.S.A. The foliage and mossy green rocks surrounding the falls have the most intense green I've ever seen. The lacy pattern of Fairy Falls is enhanced by a two-second time exposure.
Moonlight Reflecting Across the Ocean

Moonlight Reflecting Across the Ocean. Taken from a cruise ship (I was teaching a photography workshop, and I took this in between classes).

Strangler Fig Roots Strangles A Cypress Tree, 2 of 2
image
The Strangler Fig's aerial roots wrap around a Cypress tree in the Florida Everglades. Strangler Fig seedling plants often germinate high in the branches of another tree where the sticky seeds are deposited by birds. As the young stem grows upward, long slender aerial roots are extended downward and around the host tree until they reach the ground. After taking root in the ground, the root trunks increase slowly in size, encircling the host in a strangling embrace!
