I Remember Lovejoy Lane
image
The nation’s first public housing project was launched in St. Louis, Missouri in the early 1940s. Initially it was a model community which stood in stark contrast to the cold water flats that It replaced. As a member of that first generation of children to grow up in “Carr Square Village”, I still share the pride of the village with current and former residents from all over the country. For more than 30 years we have reunited annually at Carr Square Park. The village has been redesigned in recent years and my original address on Lovejoy Lane no longer exists. This painting is a tribute to the unique culture that existed there and now lives on only in our memories. Original oil on canvas.
