Visiting Bryce Canyon National Park is a surreal experience. Numerous spires, hoodoos, and other rock formations cover the landscape, each unique and beautiful in their own way. Sunrise and sunset are a must see, as the lighting over the amphitheater as the sun begins to rise or set creates a real visual explosion for the visitor.

Bighorn Portrait
image
Back to the May trip.....outside of the luck we had during our February trip, this is the only other time that we were able to see and photograph so many bighorn sheep. There was a large group that grazed not far from the Yellowstone picnic area the entire two weeks we were there as well as another large group in the Gardiner canyon. Makes you wonder if they get headaches, carrying around those heavy curls :-)

Initially thought this guy was a grizzly when we first spotted him (actually hoping), but he turned out to be a beautiful cinnamon colored black bear.

Chocolate and Black bear cubs located near Calcite Springs Overlook in Yellowstone National Park - photographed early in the morning, May 30, 2008
Up & about by 5:30 a.m. on this particular day. Made it to the Tower turn off around 7:20 a.m. and kept our eyes peeled for Rosie and her cubs, as we had watched them the day previous. Upon rounding a curve, we spotted a few people standing on the side of the road and knew instantly that we had hit the jackpot. Even better yet, there was no ranger in sight. The husband dropped me off so he could go and park the car. I thought, "here's my chance to show what can be captured with my new 80-400mm lens." I set up the tripod and camera and was not disappointed. For at least 30 minutes, these little cubs put on quite the show; running around, playing, fighting, and having a good time. Mama bear was never far away and stayed between the spectators and her babies. While it is probably not the best strategy, I decided to just shoot away and prayed for a couple o

bighorn sheep photographed on a ridge near the Yellowstone River
Funny story....we had pulled into Wrecker's pull-out on this particular day with temps @
-24 degrees fahrenheit and spent approximately 20 minutes watching a pack of wolves through the spotting scope that were at least 1-2 miles away. After deciding that we had seen enough and needed to warm up, we got in our rented SUV to leave, and I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. Much to our surprise, there were two bighorn sheep grazing not even 25 feet from us, and they had apparently been there the whole time. In seven years, we had never been so close to these majestic creatures, so I jumped out of the SUV and started taking pictures. Neither ram seemed to be bothered by our presence, although they would occasionally look up to make sure we were not getting too close. I chose this as one of my favorites because of all the incredible details....the eyes, the curls, the colors, and the grasses hanging from the ram's mouth...and a

Different pose by Mr. Coyote. Just loved the contrasting light & shadows, and especially the way the light hit his eyes.

We watched this cow moose for quite some time outside the east entrance to the park. She drew quite the crowd but didn't seem to be bothered by all the spectators.

There were two of these yellow-bellied marmots running around a rock ledge along the Beartooth Highway. One was quite shy and elusive, and the other, as you can see, was quite the ham. He didn't mind stopping to pose and was quite inquisitive. The white background was, surprisingly, some very deep snow for late May.
