Situated at Bathurst a few hours drive due west of Sydney the track hosts a number of major races each year, the most famous of which is the V8 Super Cars Bathurst 1000 (161 laps), held on the long weekend in October each year. Current Track Lap Record = 2:08.4651 (Jamie Whincup, Ford BF Falcon, 2007, V8 Supercar) The current track is just over 6.2 km around rising to 862m at the top with a 174 m difference between the top and bottom of the track. Parts of the track have grades of 1 in 6. Top speeds of up to 300km have been recorded on Conrod Straight. The circuit is open to the public but a 60kph speed limit is imposed and regularly policed. The National Motor Racing Museum is located at Mount Panorama and showcases an impressive array of motorcycle and car racing memorabilia from all over the country. The Museum is is located at Murray's Corner, at the foot of Mount Panorama and is open every day (except Christmas Day and Good Friday) - Hours:- 9:00am to 4:30pm WIKIPEDIA The Chase,a 3 turn addition to Conrod Straight was completed in 1987 thus interrupting the longest straight in world car racing at that time. The Manning enters the sea via the Old Bar entrance possibly less that 8 - 10km, as the crow flys, north of Black Head. There is another entrance at Harrington perhaps a similar distance north of Old Bar. The manning is the only river in NSW to have 2 entrances to the sea as far as I am aware. Cathcart Catholic Church, Cathcart on The Kings Highway between Bega and Bombala Cathcart Catholic Church, Cathcart on The Kings Highway between Bega and Bombala image © All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images This old church, built Circa 1880 and closed in 1970 , looks destined to fall over in not too many more years. It appears it is being allowed to deteriorate and is currently used to store bales of hay. It could be saved if action was taken in the not too distant future. Its impending demise would indeed be a sad loss for this community. Despite this situation the town does seem to be quite proud of its history and is well worth stopping over in and taking a stroll down the main road to view the many green information plaques located on many of the historic timber buildings. The town appears to need an injection of investment cash but sadly, perhaps the through traffic flow up the Kings Highway to nearby Bombala does not economically justify restorations as profitably as say for Tilba, down on the coast. It takes at least 3 hours for skilled climbers to ascend to the top. General Information With some side detours the up to 14km round trip walk up to the Grand High Tops in the Warrumbungle National Park is well worth the effort and for that reason it is regarded in the top 10 walks in Australia. The walk departs from the Pincham Car Park with much of the track across Wallaby Flat beside the usually dry creek on level paved ground with gradual but increasing steepness till the stairs are reached. The last section which takes about an hour requires steep ascent of more than 500 steps with a final walk of about 30 minutes over very rough ground adjacent the Bread Knife before finally scrambling up to the Grand High Tops. Allow 4-5 hours minimum to do this 12.5km walk. The grade is marked as 'moderate to steep'. Once at the top the view is amazing with all the high peaks visible as far as Bluff Mountain, Mount Exmouth and Siding Springs Observatory while behind you is the impressive Crater Bluff. Directly below is the well named 'Breadknife' which can be seen in the near centre of this image. This walk is definitely not recommend for anyone with arthritis or fitness or mobility issues. Warrumbungle National Park is situated 35 km west of Coonabarabran and 80 km from Gilgandra in Central Western NSW. Access to the Park from Coonabarabran is by the bitumened Timor Road which becomes John Renshaw Parkway. There are many points of interest along the way including White Gums Lookout, Siding Springs Astronomical Observatory and a plethora of astronomical letterboxes, private astronomy telescope shelters and several large roadside educational astronomy billboards associated with Siding Springs Observatory. The Warrunbungles are considered one of the best night sky viewing points in Australia due to lack of nearby urban light pollution sources. More Images HERE

Sunset -The Esplanade Hervey Bay Sunset -The Esplanade Hervey Bay image Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images Smoke haze from annual winter burning off left a pall of smoke on the horizon which turned the sky almost black on sunset. Hervey Bay is located on the Fraser Coast of South East Queensland and is the main stepping off point for Fraser Island. Hervey Bay is growing rapidly with a current population of around 53,000 residents and is a popular retirement town for people escaping the colder southern areas of Australia. Captain James Cook first sailed into the area in 1770 but the first European settlement of Hervey Bay was not till the 1850s. Originally Hervey Bay was part of a cattle station known as the the Toogoom Run, which had been established in 1854. Boyle Martin was the first permanent white settler at Hervey Bay arriving with his wife and child, in 1863. Of course aboriginal settlement pre dated European settlement here by many thousands of years with tribes annually visiting the nearby Bunya Mountains and feasting on the delicious Bunya nuts. With the Great Sandy Straits and K'gari or Fraser Island so close life was idyllic with plenty of food always available. The Great Sandy Straits are an annual stopping off point for migrating Humpback Whales and also Dugong who feed on the seagrasses in the shallow areas of the sandy straits. Noosa Botanic Gardens Ampitheatre Overlooking Lake McDonald, Cooroy, Queensland Noosa Botanic Gardens Ampitheatre Overlooking Lake McDonald, Cooroy, Queensland image Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Images After extensive preparation work the Noosa Botanic Gardens were officially opened to the public in August 1990 although surprisingly, they are not well known. The gardens comprise 8 hectares of native and exotic plant species and are ideally located on the shores of Lake MacDonald, a short drive from the Noosa hinterland town of Cooroy. Among the attractions in these gardens are an open air bush chapel, fern house, lily pond, large lawn areas and a Grecian style amphitheatre. Wildlife is everywhere particularly birdlife around the shores of Lake MacDonald. The site was originally farmland, part of which was once an unofficial rubbish tip. The land was resumed by Council in the late 1950s. A significant part of the resumed land was utiised to create Lake Macdonald which is now used as a water supply for Coroy and surrounding areas. Unfortunately these gardens, like so many Botanic Gardens in Australia today, appear to be under-funded so basic labelling of many species has deteriorated and needs attention. The full time staff of 2 do an amazing job though considering all that is necessary to keep these gardens in the presentable fashion that they indeed are. This lack of resourcing of Botanic Gardens is a similar story right across the nation as funding for Arboretums and Botanic Gardens has become more difficult to obtain from governments while commercial funding is increasingly highly conditional. Once managed by botanists and a storehouse for native as well as exotic diversity Botanic Gardens today are increasingly being botanically "dumbed down" by economics based management to focus on pretty flowers, and plants of eye catching potential to attract visitors, who may not be necessarily interested in botanic elements of the particular gardens. www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=nbg-history www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=nbg-attrac...
